Ask a Sex Therapist

I am a male and have been masturbating from the age of 17. For 2 years I masturbated 2 or 3 times a day. I have lost a lot of energy because of this. Now I am 21 and I get very exhausted after doing any mundane work. For the past year I have reduced the rate to once a week. Still I feel very exhausted. This has been the case with me since I was 18. Should I take any medicine like normal protein or vitamin tablets or any other tablets, or exercise to maintain my health. I want to be fit and lead a healthy life.

As far as I know, masturbation has rarely drained the energy out of men to the point of making even mundane tasks difficult. I suggest you speak to your family doctor to be sure there are no other issues going on. - Answer provided by Alan L. Marcus, Ph.D., AASECT Certified, drmarcus@tmail.com, www.gpatherapy.com.

Masturbation is surely not the cause of your exhaustion. Many persons suggest that masturbation is invigorating. Please mention your exhaustion to your doctor as soon as possible. Something other than masturbation is most assuredly the culprit. - Answer provided by Tim Britton, Ph.D., AASECT, ABS, timbritton@yahoo.com.

Good for you for wanting to be fit and healthy -- that's an admirable goal for anyone no matter how they are currently feeling. Although achieving orgasm can make a person feel tired afterwards, masturbation in and of itself should not cause a person to lose energy in the way that you are describing. Your exhaustion after even "mundane work" does concern me. I suggest seeing a doctor about being so exhausted to determine the root cause of this issue.
- Answer provided by L. Kris Gowen, PhD, EdM, drlkg@yahoo.com.
