Got A Question For A Sex Therapist?

Ask a Sex Therapist

I am 20 and I have problems getting an erection or maintaining one. Even when I masturbate I don't always get a full erection. I do wake up with a fully hard erection though. I understand this could possibly be psychological and I've read the responses relating to achieving a comfort zone but that doesn't really help me. Should I go see a sex therapist? Thanks.

When an individual in their 20’s has problems getting or maintaining erections, the problem most likely is related to anxiety. The fact you have morning erections show you are able to get a full erection and it is not uncommon for men not to be fully erect when they masturbate. Take the focus off of having to have an erection. Focus on pleasure and if this problem continues you may want to see a sex therapist or urologist to rule out any medical conditions. - Answer provided by Jason S. Quintal, Ph.D., MSW, LCSW, DrJ@RelationshipSpecialties.com, www.RelationshipSpecialties.com.
