Ask a Sex Therapist

I am a 57 year old male and have had a problem with premature ejaculation for years. I am married, but have not had sex with my wife since Feb. 2003. She has had several surgeries and is in chronic pain. I have been going to a sensual massage therapist, but find that I ejaculate whenever I am touched in the pubic area. I have heard that there are exercises that one can do to correct premature ejaculation. Can you advise if this is correct and what exercises I should do?

A man can gain "control" of his ejaculatory response. And yes there are exercises to assist in this. Roughly, they are called "start and stop" exercises. Basically a man would stimulate himself and before ejaculation would stop stimulating himself and squeeze the tip of the penis. The result will be a lessening of the ejaculatory reflex as well as a bit of a loss of erection. Once the feeling of ejaculation has passed, this person would begin self stimulation. Again prior to ejaculation he would stop stimulation and squeeze the tip. He should probably do this 4 or 5 times before allowing himself to ejaculate. What he is doing is retraining himself and thereby taking control of his ejaculation. - Answer provided by Michael Gonzales, Ph.D., mfgonzal@speakeasy.net, www.upasoc.com.
