Ask a Sex Therapist

What classes or courses does one take to become a therapist?

There are many routes to become a therapist. Individuals need to have a background in psychology, social work, marriage and family, and mental health to name a few. Typically you will need to have your master’s degree in a counseling related field. Then depending upon where you live, you will need to become licensed in your field of choice. If you are considering specializing in sex therapy you would need to continue your education and fulfill those requirements. Hope this helps. - Answer provided by Jason S. Quintal, Ph.D., MSW, LCSW, DrJ@RelationshipSpecialties.com, www.RelationshipSpecialties.com.

Becoming a therapist is a long and involved process. The options are: masters level therapist or doctoral level. Clearly the doctorate level is much more involved and more time consuming. Most colleges have programs that can lead to becoming licensed. - Answer provided by Michael Gonzales, Ph.D., mfgonzal@speakeasy.net, www.upasoc.com.

This is a very broad question. You can examine the realm of sexual counseling through a variety of educational resources, some of which do not require a degree. Ministerial occupations, medical occupations, bodywork modalities, psychological environments, surrogacy. It depends on what you want to do and what works for you. In addition to degreed programs, explore Tantra and Taoist Erotic massage workshops and teachers. The most important requirement, in my opinion, is to have an open heart and mind about your entire being and to not think of sex as just an activity between the navel and the knees, but to truly understand it as life force energy that is to be honored in a sacred way and nurtured as one would nurture all other aspects of his/herself. Your own sexual healing (and we all need it to one degree or another) is the first and most important step you can take towards becoming a sexual healer. Love and light to you. - Answer provided by EveLynn Maurine, CSB, info@sacred-haven.org, www.sacred-haven.org, www.awakeningbody.com.
