Ask a Sex Therapist

I am an uncircumcised male. I am wondering if it is necessary to roll back the foreskin when having sex? My foreskin has always retracted to a minimal degree and sex was attainable but the last time I tried to have sex, the entire head of my penis popped out and I could not get the skin back over until morning. Also, I found it very sensitive. What could be the problem and is it to be expected that that the entire head pop out?

Sorry, but this is a concern for a medical doctor. You want to see a urologist, a doctor who specializes in the mechanics of the male penis. Don't be embarrassed to talk about your concern with a physician. If the physician doesn't take you seriously or seems embarrassed, just find someone else who is more sympathetic. - Answer provided by Stephanie Buehler, PsyD, Psychologist and Certified Sex Therapist, drbuehler@cox.net, www.thebuehlerinstitute.com.

If you do have a foreskin, the foreskin can be pulled back and this should be easy to do. If it's difficult to do, or painful, or impossible, talk to a doctor. You need to pull back (also called retracting) the foreskin in order to put on a condom correctly or engage in sexual activities. If don't retract the foreskin adequately, sexual activities (including masturbation) can be painful. If you continue having difficulties retracting you need to consult your doctor.

If there is a problem it is what you indicate, sensitivity. Most men who are uncircumcised role back the foreskin prior to intercourse. This is, however, individual preference. Experiment, there is no "right" answer. - Answer provided by Michael Gonzales, Ph.D., mfgonzal@speakeasy.net, www.upasoc.com.
